Super Size Me Criticism – Why It Is Not Science & Emotionally Acceptable?

By Evan | Last updated on

“Super Size Me” is a documentary film directed by Morgan Spurlock. The movie has set up a series of rules that the starring – Morgan himself, needs to follow. The Super Size Me debunked unhealthy American habits including the eating menu, prescribed amount of walking distances and etc, in order to conclude the possible influence of American eating habits (usually considered chain fast food & non-healthy).

Super Size Me - Title

Progressively, to explore America’s fast food industry’s corporate influence on ordinary people, including how those companies encourage people to eat high-calorie but low-nutrition foods and the consequences.

Super Size Me Controversy – Fact Not Checked

The movie itself was a big hit – it is interesting, well-organized structure, and easy and witty tone of the narrative, making this documentary even better outstanding. The impact was posed on society, people, and even fast-food companies. For example, MacDonald discounted their extra-size combo menu after the movie became a hit. But, there are many questions and critics against Morgan and his movie. The main Super Size Me controversy is mainly about its dramatic performance – many have been questioned.

In the movie, Morgan must fully eat 3 McDonald’s Extra Size meals per day (breakfast, lunch, dinner), and doctors will check his health status regularly. After 30 days trial, Morgan has reported that he has gained 11.1 kilograms (about 24 lb) with a 13% body mass increase. Increased his cholesterol to 230 mg/dL (from 6.0 mmol/L), and he experienced mood swings, sexual dysfunction, and fat accumulation in his liver causing FLD (fatty liver disease).

And this is where the case is: It is hard to measure a man’s psychological status like mood swings and private sexual performance, so we guess it’s here – eating McDonald's will cause ED. However liver dysfunction, the liver index can be recorded and analyzed.

The biggest criticism point towards Morgan’s movie was in lack of scientific approach and acting dramatically. A professor at Linköping University in Sweden replicates Morgan’s experiment with a few of his students as volunteers. Fredrik Nyström 's team spend entire month long to repeat Morgan Spurlock‘s diet. None of the students ever suffered any of the effects Morgan Spurlock claimed were a result of his diets like his dying liver or his mood swings. Neither other disease was caused by considered unhealthy diets except changing body mass.

Morgan Spurlock confessed that he was drinking alcohol during the test period. Consider that liver damage presented in the movie (most likely a possible reason) will need considerably a great amount of alcohol intaking. Reasonably, quite the details are not included in his movie Super Size Me, and we don’t know if there’s other underneath information or situation that happens behind the scenes. All information Morgan gave led to a strong implication is he had an underlying condition crop up and he tried to pass it off as it was McDonald's meals that caused his liver problem (and other health issues). That seriously damages the credibility of his documentary movie.

Super Size Me Criticism – None Quantitative Research

Quantitation is important. Especially when we need to set up precise and correct scientific research to certify and validate a serious question that relates to hundreds of million’s life and health.

Super Size Me

Unfortunately, we can’t really find a real clue about Morgan’s effort to set up scientifical quantitative research about the relationship between eating at McDonald's & getting health problems. For instance, if we want a persuasive as well as credible result about that topic, we at least need:

  • A bigger sample, probably a thousand or more – Morgan has a sample that covers himself only.

  • A full quantitate daily intake – That means Morgan will need a complete same menu for every day plus non-changeable. For example, a 5000 calories daily intake doesn’t matter if it’s Mcdonald's, even if you eat 5000 Kcal of organic food it will not change the result (gain weight).

  • A control test group that takes zero McDonald as a comparison. Without a comparable sample who eat non-McDonald food with the same condition (5000 kcal per day) then there’s no one can prove the effectiveness of this quantitative research.

None of these basic requirements of scientific research was designed in Super Size Me. None of the reliable conditions and argument of research listed above was there in the movie. For Morgan’s experiment, any slight differences in a person’s daily intake will probably influence the output and need to be taken into account.

Long to short, the Super Size Me isn’t a rigorous and professional scientific experiment but an entertainment show which provides ideas which not necessarily correct. For people troubled by Morgan’s opinion, there are more than enough arguments here to ignore some of his points.

Super Size Me Controversy – Complete Nonsense?

In fact, no. Although Super Size Me was criticized for its overly dramatic performance and unscientific experiment design, some of his ideas are still noteworthy and valued for reference. Here are some suggestions:

  • Correctly recognize your BMI: Your body index is important, but it will not be the only thing that value you. Also, it ignored big bone & mass, muscular people. So take it as a reference, to explore better eating-working balance.

  • Maintaining a healthy weight: a healthy weight doesn’t mean slim, but it needs to be kept in good condition, at least you need to feel comfortable with your own body.

  • Talk to more people: You’d better communicate with other people about your body condition – thus those hidden health risks could be precepted and judged earlier. The Bottom Line

The Super Size Me controversy is real. It does not really “unveil” the evil of the McDonald & fast food companies but using a simple but sensational conclusion tries to resolve a complex argument. If you think you need to change your eating habit, better to ask your big friends on PlusCupid!
